War Thunder game cinematic released, we worked on it lately. I want to share the video and tell what I did in it. In search of new and interesting work, we came to the Gaijin Entertainment company (one of the leaders in online games) with a proposal to collaborate. We proposed to make a movie different from most other cinematics for the games, with live actors and sets..

This has become a serious challenge for the whole team, as. our core competence is only Post Production and had little to do with the real film industry, but we decided to take a chance. Production Studio "Film UA" helped us, they helped to hold the actor casting and provided us with resources to implement ideas. Based on experience, obtained during onset visual effects supervising and detailed preparation with all team, we did the job. Just a month of preparation, few days of shooting and we obtained all necessary materials and the studio began work.

I participated in almost all stages of production, and of course, most of the time I spent at my main occupation – post production of shooting materials. Key tasks that I had to do on this project: creating necessary tools for work, Shading, Lighting and of course Cloud FX, I was responsible for creation of the whole scene of sky battle. I want to talk a little bit more about clouds, but first the result of the work of our team:

War Thunder: “Win Nami” / “Victory is ours” from Gaijin Entertainment on Vimeo.

The video was a huge scene of of sky fight, while on, the idea of the director, everything must pass above a dense clouds. I started to solve this task. Previously, I had been doing cloud for other projects, but this amount of cloud work I have not got. Our studio works in Houdini, it's perfect for creating procedural solutions of almost any task in cg. Well, I just love it and use every day.

In searching for information, I found a lot of useful resources. Here are some of them:

I took the basic model, and sent it to Asset that modifying the form and add a variety of noise. Result I demonstrated in a short making-off, I tried to show the structures contains in frame composition:

Houdini Clouds for War Thunder “Victory is ours” – cinematic trailer from Mike Datsik on Vimeo.

That's all I wanted to write, If you have questions please contact me by e-mail.
